With today's aggresive advertising market, students need to gain a competitive edge in order to break into business. The South Dakota Advertising Federation could help students gain that edge. SDAF is the South Dakota chapter of the American Advertising Federation. "SDAF is an association with educational purposes to increase knowledge about advertising and to provide different tools and opportunities to help students break into business," said Ruth Ann Scott, Executive Director at SDAF.
This month Aliza Sherman will be speaking at CJ Callaways on the 18th about reaching niche target audiences with social media marketing tools. After the program there will also be a PROBONO event at the Empire Mall for volunteers to donate their time and help the HELP!Line Center.
SDAF usually has monthly events which consist of a speaker and a luncheon, as well as other events throughout the year. SDAF also hosts a Student Day every year. I asked a few students about their thoughts about the SDAF Student Day. Kim Hartman, SDSU senior graphic design major, said, "I thought the round table discussions were a great opportunity to ask real professionals about the market place." Nicole Appl, SDSU senior graphic design major, said she really enjoyed talking to professionals and making networking connections. Ashton Hofer, SDSU senior advertising major, enjoyed the keynote topic of discussion. She said, "Social media is great." She also thought the resume and portfolio reviews were helpful. Much like the other students I asked, I really enjoyed networking with local professionals. Their experiences and advice are really helpful. The agency tours put into perspective what the workplace is like, which is definitely something you should know before entering the market.
These events are a means for students to network with professionals who have already broken into the business. These professionals could provide insight and advice for the student and who could potentially hire them. Students get to meet, talk, and interact with the best of the best. Networking is a very powerful tool. Also, students will gain exposure to businesses that they may want to work for someday. There are over 50 businesses that are members of SDAF, and students could network with them all.
But wait. There's more. SDAF offers a number of scholarships and other awards programs for students like the ADDY's. Internships and job offers are also benefits that SDAF offers. Students can check out all these opportunities at the SDAF website, or on the AAF website.
Being a member of SDAF is a great opportunity; one that all students should take advantage of. Membership to SDAF is $120 for a whole year, and you get to attend the monthly meetings for free. Just think about all the networking and fun you are missing out on.
Why should students join SDAF?
Do you really need to ask that question?
Don't forget to check out the SDAF events for this month and get involved.
